We believe no child should be deprived of the right to education

Background

Nepal is heaven! Nepal is home to the world's highest peak, Mt. Everest, and dozens of other peaks above 6,000 meters’ elevation. This makes Nepal one of the best countries for trekking.

Nepal is not only the land of mountains but also the land of festivals. Its 30 million population and more than 100 ethnic groups celebrate over 50 festivals every year. Nepal is also a place with rich cultures as well as unique art and architecture. Its capital city Kathmandu claims seven UNESCO world heritage sites.

However, Nepal is far from heaven to the majority of Nepalese.

Nepal is one of the poorest countries in the world. Many Nepali struggle to get enough food and stay sheltered. Nearly 30% of the population lives on less than $1.25 USD per day - that’s barely enough for a cup of coffee in other countries. Almost 80% of the country’s population lives in rural areas with limited or no access to primary health care, education, clean drinking water, sanitation and other basic services.

Literacy rate in Nepal is very low. On every trekking route in Nepal, you can see porters carrying heavy loads. Without education, they cannot find a decent job except working in the field or as a laborer. They work hard, yet what they don’t make enough to support their families. Poor families are often obliged to send their children to work rather than to school. One out of 4 children at 4-5 years’ old is engaged in some kind of family or wage labor.

Life is hard, especially for people who live in remote mountain areas. Generation by generation, they live a hard life with little hope to change. Without education, they cannot break the vicious cycle of poverty.
On this beautiful land, poverty exists, everywhere.

Heaven needs help!

Mission Statement
Project iBelieve provides financial support to Nepali children with an access to education through fundraising, and assists local schools in delivering quality education and extracurricular programs.

Vision
Through fundraising campaigns and efforts of volunteers, we will help Nepali children in remote areas remove barriers to education, empower them to take control of their lives, and create opportunities for them to gain skills for a better future for themselves and their next generations.

Beliefs
We believe that no child should be deprived of the right to education. We believe love has no boundary. We believe we can make a difference in some Nepali children’s lives

No child should be deprived of the right to education!

Project iBelieve was created with the main objective of helping Nepali Children with their education.Through support from people like you, Project iBelieve provides financial assistance to children whose families cannot afford to send them to school.

How is Project iBelieve Different from Other Charitable Projects

Establishs One-to-One Sponsorships

One of the main objectives of Project iBelieve is to establish one-to-one sponsorship relationships between sponsors and Nepali Children who need financial support on education.

In a one-to-one sponsorship:
– Sponsors choose children to support, and can terminate the commitment at anytime
– 100% of the financial support from sponsors goes to the paired kids

Provides School Supplies and Healthy Lunch

Project iBelieve also works with elementary schools in remote areas to provide students  (from kindergarten to Grade 8) with learning supplies, student uniforms, healthy snacks, sports equipment, etc.

Facilitates Sports and Extra-curricular Programs

The project purchases sports equipment for supported schools and facilitates the schools to run physical education. We help schools run other  extra-curricular activities and projects which not only add fun for students, but also help them learn practical knowledge and skills that will be useful in making a living.

Helps Schools Improve English Teaching

Project iBelieve raises fund for schools to hire qualified English teachers, and works with English teachers in developing interactive teaching methods.

Project iBelieve also recruits volunteers from English speaking countries to help improve students’ English skills.

Maintains Low Administration Costs

Project iBelieve is managed and administrated by volunteers. No salaries or allowances are paid to the volunteers. Programs and activities are managed in a way to keep costs as low as possible.

Our Team

Kim Chen
Executive Director and Founder
“The stunning Himalayan views amazed me, and the hardship of Nepali life in the Himalayan range saddened me.”  On the way to the Everest Base Camp, Kim encountered many Nepali children who worked as labors on the trail.  Instead of working on the trail to support their families, these kids should be in school. After she came back from the trip, Kim decided to create a project to provide opportunities for Nepali children to continue their education. “I believe education is key for Nepali to breaking the vicious cycle of poverty.  I believe a little gift from us could change some Nepali’s life.  I believe we have the power to raise them high and bring hopes to them. Extend our hand!”
Bal Darnal
Program Manager
Born and raised in the Solukhumbu region, Bal had to drop out of school at a young age and worked as a porter to support his family. He understands well the importance of education for Nepali people. He wants to devote his time to helping Nepali children stay in school, and hopes no more child needs to drop out of school to work as a laborer. Besides volunteering for Project iBelieve, Bal runs a trekking company, Skyway Nepal Treks, and tries his best to help his staff develop skills to increase their marketability. He also donates part of business profits to Project iBelieve.
Tian Miao Yu
Director of Marketing Communications
Information Technology Manager

Like most Canadian high school students, Tian was completely unaware of the hardships that Nepali children faced on a daily basis before becoming involved with Project iBelieve. It was a shocking revelation when he discovered how countless children at his age or younger were forced into labor to support themselves and their families, rather than pursuing their education. Once being completely ignorant to the issue, Tian currently works on advocating for Project iBelieve’s cause through his proficiency in website administration and design, as well as through direct promotion and fundraising initiatives.
Marie Chan
Accounting and Administration Manager

Marie has been supporting charities for seniors and children in need. After seeing photos and hearing the hardship stories of Nepali life, she decided to join Project iBelieve and contribute her expertise in financial management and budgeting to the team. She holds a designation of Chartered Professional Accountants (CPA) of Canada, and works as a Senior Financial Advisor in a local government. She would like to utilize her experience and knowledge in accounting to help with the administration and financial management of the project.
